Strategy Sieve

I like to use a tool I call the Strategy Sieve to evaluate strategic options against each other. To start the process we will agree on a set of filters used in sifting the options through the sieve. Filters I typically use include Alignment, Capabilities, Resources, and Objectives. Within each filter, we identify specific filtering criteria.

The sifting process is as much about the debates and discussions that happen as it is about the results that come out of the Strategy Sieve. In a successful process, vehemently argued disagreements between active participants will lead to a deeper understanding of what is true about the strategic options, the strategic objectives, and about the company itself.

At the end of the sifting process, the right strategic option should be clear.
